Cowboy Hat Sizing Guide – How to Measure Your Hat Size
Cowboy Hat Sizing Guide
Getting the right hat size is essential for both comfort and style. A well-fitted cowboy hat should sit snugly on your head without being tight — here's how to measure correctly and find your perfect fit.
How to Measure Your Head for a Cowboy Hat
- Wrap a flexible measuring tape around your head, about 1 inch above your ears and across your forehead
- Keep the tape level all the way around — don't let it dip at the back
- Note the measurement in inches or centimeters
- If between sizes, size up for felt hats (they can be shaped down) and size down for straw hats (they have less give)

Resistol & Stetson Hat Sizing
Resistol and Stetson hats use traditional US hat sizing (6⅞ – 8). Refer to the main size chart above. Most styles are available in sizes 6⅞ through 7⅞. If your measurement falls between sizes, we recommend sizing up for felt hats.
Gone Country Hat Sizing
Gone Country hats are available in traditional US hat sizes and include a fitted sweatband with sizing tape for fine-tuning the fit. Refer to the main size chart above.
Hat Fit Tips
- Felt hats — Can be steamed and shaped to adjust fit by ¼ to ½ size. A hat stretcher can also expand a slightly tight hat.
- Straw hats — Less forgiving than felt. Measure carefully and size down if between sizes.
- New hats may feel snug — felt hats will relax slightly with wear and conform to your head shape over time.
- Hat bands — A thick hat band can reduce interior circumference by up to ¼ size. Factor this in if your hat has a wide inner band.
- Hair volume — If you wear your hair up or in a bun, measure with your hair styled as you plan to wear it under the hat.
Hat Care & Shape Maintenance
- Store on a hat rack or crown-down on a flat surface — never brim-down
- Brush felt hats counter-clockwise with a soft hat brush to remove dust
- Steam felt hats gently to reshape after crushing or rain
- Keep straw hats away from prolonged moisture — allow to dry naturally if wet
- Use a hat stretcher if your hat feels tight after purchase
